Galveston (2018)

“Why did those men want to kill you?” – Rocky

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – After being set up by his boss, a hit-man tries to find a way to take his revenge.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a few months back and was somewhat interested in seeing what it was all about.

This is a typical crime genre film that unfortunately seems too much like the rest of the films that try and do a similar thing.

This film doesn’t feel fresh or original in any way and the direction that the story takes is much too predictable.

They try to add in a few surprises and twists and turns along the way yet none of them really help make the story more interesting and they also help make the rest of story even more predictable.

Ben Foster does a fine job in the lead role and makes us believe his character’s plight yet he has terrible chemistry with his costar Elle Fanning which takes so much away from the story since it hinges too much on the connections between these two strangers as they try to find a way to move on with their lives despite everything going on around them.

The casting of Beau Bridges as the bad guy is also a mistake since he doesn’t really manage to be a very effective villain.

Bottom Line – Mediocre crime thriller that doesn’t feel fresh and unique in any way. The story is quite predictable and even a few of the elements that they try to use as twists and turns just aren’t effective because one can see them miles away. Foster is fine in the lead role but he and Fanning have no chemistry together which also hurts the way the film could be perceived. Bridges is extremely miscast in the role of the villain since he isn’t very effective in that role.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was slated to open TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) in Canada as its premiere in September, 2018. It was cancelled at the last minute due to the inability of director and major cast to attend. It was replaced by A Private War. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
