Did They Get it Right? – Best Supporting Actress – Oscars 2009

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Penélope Cruz (Nine)
Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air)
Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart)
Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air)
Mo’Nique (Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire)

Biggest Snub:

Diane Kruger – Inglorious Basterds

My Overall Thoughts:

This is a year wuth 5 very talented actresses nominated and 4 of them give great performances here but one of them gives an extremely powerful performances that shattered all of the rest no matter how great their performances are.

My Rankings:

Supporting Actress

5. Penélope Cruz
4. Anna Kendrick
3. Maggie Gyllenhaal
2. Vera Farmiga
1. Mo’Nique

4. NineTerrible film because it makes almost no sense. The various segments fail to have coherent connections between them and things feel much too choppy and disjointed throughout. The songs are what should be bringing this film together but none of them are very memorable enough to evoke sufficient emotions from the audience.  The cast is filled with some amazingly talented actors and actresses, but none of them get enough screen time in order to make an impact on the almost non-existent storyline.
3. PreciousNot an easy film to watch because it deals with some very powerful issues. They don’t shy away from discussing these issues openly and frankly but in doing so makes the audience feel both uncomfortable and enlightened at the same time. The cast is quite powerful and Monique gives a very worthy performance here in a role that gave her both a Golden Globe and Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. It was also able to win Best Adapted Screenplay. This film is too dark and despite being poignant, I will probably never want to see it again.
2. Up in the AirGreat movie. Perfectly cast. Shows how people try to hide their loneliness until it just bursts out.
1. Crazy HeartThis is an amazing portrayal of how an aging star deals with the fact that his star has faded yet still wants to continue living the life of a celebrity. Bridges is superb in the main role and gives such an amazing and realistic portrayal of this character. The arc that this character is given is excellent and we get to see how things can change for him over the ups and downs of life. Bridges deservingly won an Oscar for Best Actor for this performance and it remains among his best. Gylenhaal is also great as his new muse and she excels in this role because we can feel the ways that she inspires him along the way. The music of this film is set up perfectly and I love listening to the main song of this move because it’s so emotional and says so much about life itself. The musical score and soundtrack are also quite enjoyable to listen to and they give us the impression that these are real songs being played by a Country singer and not an actor.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Not question about it!  Monique clearly gives the most powerful performance of the 5 nominees even though the others are still quite good.

Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!

  1. Mo’Nique’s performance is truly great–I found myself both hating and pitying her character. The question is why someone capable of such brilliance hasn’t done much since.
