Surviving the Game (1994)

“Stevie Wonder could follow these tracks!” – Cole

Number of Times Seen – Twice (Cable in the 90’s and 9 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A homeless man is hired to be a survival guide for a group of wealthy hunters, but is surprised when things are not as they seem.

My Take on it – This a film that I recall seeing on cable years ago after having read the story that it was based on in high school.

The premise of this film is great but they unfortunately don’t manage to present things well enough to be as impactful as it should be.

The story that this is based on brings forth much of the psychological aspects of things yet this film only touches upon them from a very superficial level which is a shame because it misses out on the opportunity to really dive into the guts of such an idea that says so much about the nature of humans and the killer instinct that is in all of us; most much deeper thankfully than others.

The cast of this film is great and we get to see Ice-T, Rutger Hauer, Charles Dutton, F. Murray Abraham, William McNamara, John C. McGinley and Gary Busey in prominent roles.

Unfortunately, they are all almost completely wasted because their characters aren’t developed well enough and they all are presented very superficially despite the talent that they each possess.

Also, none of them are really given enough screen time to shine which also takes so much away from things because we really have no reason to care about any of them or what will happen to them along the way.

Bottom Line – Great premise that just isn’t presented well enough. The story that this is based on is able to delve deep into the psychology of it all and this film just manages to scratch the surface of it all. The cast is superbly chosen yet they are almost entirely wasted because none of them are really developed well enough or given enough screen time to truly shine here. which is such a shame since they are all quite talented.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – No sets or sound stages were used. The entire movie was shot in real locations. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
