Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Apr 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A Chicago Gallery owner and her new husband travel to his boyhood home in North Carolina to meet his family while she tries to close a deal with an artist who lives nearby.
My Take on it – This is a film that I for some reason never had much of an interest in seeing and only decided to finally see what it is all about since it features an Oscar nominated performance for Best Supporting Actress.
They do a really nice job here giving us a character study of people living the simple life in a simple rural town.
They manage to create some great characters that despite all living and growing up in the same areas are all quite diverse in everything they do and all that they say.
The story of this film is a simple one, yet they manage to show the passage of time in such a community where even simple occurrences can be seen as being bigger achievements.
They are able to give some of these events an even greater emotional impact.
Amy Adams definitely stands out in her very first Oscar nominated performance and was quite deserving of getting singled out here with a Best Supporting Actress nod, even if she didn’t manage to win.
Life in these kind of towns move at a much slower pace than life in the big city and this film is able to capture such a life in a nice way.
Bottom Line – Interesting character piece that gives us some nice insight about life in rural towns. The characters are all great and allow us to see how diverse they all can be even when having similar upbringings. The story itself is quite simple and not much actually happens besides every day kinds of occurrences but it is still done in a very emotional way in order to give us a chance to see the progression of life for people living simple lives where things aren’t fast moving like in the big city. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – As of 2018, this is the only film in which Amy Adams gives the only Oscar nominated performance. In her next four Oscar nominated performances, there were at least two other nominations in the acting categories for each film. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
