Did They Get it Right? – Best Supporting Actress – Oscars 2001

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind)
Helen Mirren (Gosford Park)
Maggie Smith (Gosford Park)
Marisa Tomei (In the Bedroom)
Kate Winslet (Iris)

Biggest Snub:

Dakota Fanning – I Am Sam

My Overall Thoughts:

This is a year with 5 very talented nominees giving very powerful performances. Ultimately, all 5 of these women currently have an Oscar on their shelf, but at the time of this ceremony, only two already had won beforehand. Any of them could have own here, but there were two front-runners during the Awards season with one of them having problems since a cast mate was also nominated which would cause for them to possibly cancel one another out.

My Rankings:

Supporting Actress

5. Maggie Smith
4. Kate Winslet
3. Marisa Tomei
2. Helen Mirren
1. Jennifer Connelly

4. A Beautiful MindGood movie. Not the Best movie of the year, but close. Contains many elements that Oscar voters love.
3. Gosford ParkGreat idea that works quite well. The separation of classes in this film is quite prominent and says so much about how society was lived back then. The cast is superb but with so many characters things get slightly confusing and the result also is that there isn’t really enough screen time for any of them. Loved the way that Altman has his characters talk over one another all the time because it gives the story a feel of being more genuine. Was nominated for 7 Oscars but won the one that it truly deserved – Best Original Screenplay for Julian Fellowes who went on to create Downtown Abbey a few years later which looks at the same ideas of class in English society.
2. In the BedroomInteresting study in the human psyche and how it is affected by tragedy. Is a bit slow at certain points, but still worth waiting it out.
1. IrisGreat biopic that shows us who these people really were warts and all. All 4 lead actors are great. It’s the kind of movie that makes you wish it were longer because the characters (young and old) are all so good. Broadbent truly deserved his Oscar for this role.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Yep!  Connelly does an amazing job here and despite their being much competition between the 5 nominees, she gives a slightly better job than the rest, even if the two Dames cancelled each other out.
