The War Room (1993)

“Every time that somebody comes along, that’s got some ideas, a Democrat comes along, a Republican come up here and they ambush him. Remember Muskie? Okay? That is standard procedure. And here comes Clinton, he comes to New Hampshire, people are hurting, they want hope, they want somebody with vision, he gives it to ’em. So what do Republicans do? They get together with, “Well just, just knock it off.” If they succeed THIS time, it’s gonna be EVERY time. You are never gonna get a presidential candidate. ” – James Carville

Number of Times Seen – 1 (28 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the behind the scenes work of Bill Clinton’s campaign staff during his run for the Presidency in 1992.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by accident after reading how influential it was to the TV show The West Wing which I’m a big fan of.

This documentary is quite intriguing to watch as things unfold and I’m sure that it was even more groundbreaking and poignant when it was filmed 25 years ago than it is now.

This is largely due to the fact that many politicians (both factual and fictional) have used the various strategies shown here in order to run their own campaigns.

It’s quite easy to spot so many aspects pf The West Wing as they are portrayed by the real events of this campaign.

The various problematic issues that arose during this campaign are enjoyable to watch since we get to see the different methods used by these staffers to deflect and combat them along the way towards victory.

It’s easy to see the reasons why this campaign team were so influential in changing the way political races were run ever since.

This film gives us some great interviews with the different campaign strategists while letting us feel and understand the kind of difficult and volatile atmosphere that they needed to endure while facing the ups and downs thrown at them while on the campaign trail.

Bottom Line – Very intriguing documentary that was probably even more groundbreaking and poignant when it came out than it is now.  The methods of how the campaign moved along during various problematic issues as enjoyable to watch and it’s easy to see how this campaign truly was the influence for many politicians that came afterwards both real and fictitious.  The interviews with the different campaign strategists along the way works quite well in letting us feel and understand the volatile atmosphere that they went through at that time as they weathered many ups and downs while on the campaign trail. Recommended!
