Gaby: A True Story (1987)

“How can I scream when I can’t talk? How can I stop loving with the seed of a woman inside? God, if life is so many things that I am not, and never will be, give me the strength to be what I am” – Gaby

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 May 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Story of a young girl born with Cerebral Palsy who overcomes her disability and becomes an acclaimed author just by the use of typing with her foot.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard about beforehand.

In my quest to watch all films featuring Oscar nominated performances, I came across it and despite the premise sounding very similar to My Left Foot (1989), I was intrigued to see how they would present a story like this from a female perspective.

The premise of this film is actually quite interesting but the fact that they keep the pacing quite slow hurts things a lot.

They present things well along the way, but fail to find a way to keep the character fascinating and intriguing enough as things move along.

The editing is done quite sloppily and the story feel quite choppy as presented.

The cast is ok and I enjoyed seeing Robert Loggia in this film, but he isn’t given enough to do which is a shame.

Norma Aleando was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the family servant who does all that she can in order to help the disabled daughter of her employer fulfill her hopes and dreams despite her disability.

Bottom Line – Interesting story that moves along much too slowly. The story is presented well but they don’t manage to find a way to keep the characters intriguing enough because the story is edited very sloppily and things jump a bit too much along the way. Nice seeing Loggia here, but he doesn’t have enough to do. Aleandro was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the family servant who does all she can to help the disabled daughter of her employer.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Features Norma Aleandro’s only Oscar nominated performance. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
