Violent Saturday (1955)

“Sit down mister or I’ll kill you quick.” – Dill

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 May 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Three men plan a simple robbery in a small town which turns unexpectedly violent.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew absolutely nothing about before coming across it.

The premise is very interesting and it works quite well.

The way that they interweave the various stories of the townspeople and the robbers gives us a great perspective of the events presented since it allows us to see things from the eyes of the people on both sides of the story.

The movie starts off with a bit of melodrama with some of the characters and that allows us to get a better understanding of who each of the characters are while also doing a fine job of developing them for us in order to make the viewer care more about each of them.

Each of these characters have gotten themselves into various situations in their lives which have led them to this point in time.

The level of tension ans suspense is constantly raised due to the fact that they story constantly crosses into unexpected places.

We never truly know what will happen next as the story moves along and we are constantly reminded that none of these characters has immunity and anything can happen to any of them quite unexpectedly.

Bottom Line – Great film noir because it manages to interweave the stories of the robbers with the townspeople in order to help develop both sides in this kind of story. The melodrama at the beginning is used to help us get a much better understanding of the situations that all of these characters have gotten themselves into along the way. The story is able to move in very unexpected circles which allows for the level of suspense to be raised as we never truly know what will happen next as the story moves along. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In his biography, Ernest Borgnine reports that during the shooting Richard Fleischer asked Victor Mature to do a simple stunt which consisted to dive underneath a car, even with a big hole in the ground. And Mature refused because he had a motorcycle accident in the past on a shooting. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
