Did They Get it Right? – Best Supporting Actress – Oscars 1963

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Diane Cilento (Tom Jones)
Edith Evans (Tom Jones)
Joyce Redman (Tom Jones)
Margaret Rutherford (The V.I.P.s)
Lilia Skala (Lilies of the Field)

Biggest Snub:

Stella Stevens – The Courtship of Eddie’s Father

My Overall Thoughts:

This is a year where one film dominated many categories and actually managed t get three nominations in this one which all ended up cancelling each other out even though the other two nominees were more powerful in their performances than the trio.

My Rankings:

Supporting Actress

5. Diane Cilento
4. Joyce Redman
3. Edith Evans
2. Margaret Rutherford
1. Lilia Skala

Movies

3. Tom JonesReally boring movie. Cant understand how it won Best picture. Stay away as far as I’m concerned.
2. The V.I.P.sExcellent premise that works quite well. They manage to give us at least four great scenarios that are each unique in their own way yet find common ground so that the stories and characters can mix together in order to make things even more interesting. Superbly cast with Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Jourdan, Smith, Rod Taylor, Welles and Rutherford all creating such enjoyable and interesting characters for us to watch develop over the course of these few hours. Rutherford deservingly won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance here. The stories are all very realistic and it’s quite easy to believe that these kind of events truly could happen.
1. Lilies of the FieldGreat film that has a simple theme that resonates so well. Loved the way that the story moved along slowly as the characters little by little get to understand and appreciate what they have between one another. Poitier is superb as Homer and deservingly won an Oscar for this role. The characters become so endearing throughout the film that it’s hard not to be easily taken it by it all and feeling the urge to also pitch in however you can.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Yes and No!  MR is great in the VIP’s, but I would have gone with LS who is much more powerful in her role in LotF.

Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!

  1. We’ve discussed Tom Jones previously and our diammetrically opposed views on that one. Movie is brilliant. One of my favorites of all time. the 3 actresses probably did cancel one another out – but I would have voted for any one of them over Margaret Rutherford’s comic relief in the soap operaesque V.I.P.s Or Lilia Skala for that matter. Academy got this one way wrong in a tight field.
