Broken Lance (1954)

“Anybody that throws $10,000 in a spittoon makes me nervous. ” – Ben Devereaux

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Jun 2019)

Brief Synopsis – As their father gets older, the 4 sons of a powerful rancher vie over who should run the ranch in his stead.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I never heard about before coming across it in my quest to watch all films with Oscar nominated performances.

They do a nice job showing how a feud like this can spark a feud between brothers from different mothers when their father starts to show that he is getting close to the time when he will no longer be able to properly run the ranch.

The story is told in a way that it works on numerous levels and is able to tell a universal tale of jealousy between brothers even in a Western setting like this.

Spencer Tracy is great as the patriarch of the family and we can completely understand how he does his best to keep his sons in line even if he was never the most affectionate and caring father like they would have hoped for.

Richard Widmark and Robert Wagner are both great as the main feuding sons and we can see that they do certain things out of respect for their father despite their own personal differences.

Katy Jurado was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the Indian wife of Tracy who does her best to try and keep the peace between her son and his half-brothers.

Bottom Line – Interesting tale of a feud within a family that stems from having different mothers despite having the same father. The story works on numerous levels since it is tells a universal story set to the Western backdrop. Tracy is great as the family patriarch trying to get his sons to cooperate even if he never was the most affectionate father one could hope for. Widmark and Wagner are both equally enjoyable to watch as the two sons who are at odds with one another yet both respect their father for what he has done despite mistakes along the way.  Jurado was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work here as Tracy’s second wife who does her best to keep the peace among her son and his half-brothers.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Stuntman Russ Saunders broke and did permanent damage to his arm falling fifty feet (15.24 meters) into a lake while doubling for Richard Widmark. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
