Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Jun 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A trio of aliens venture to Earth in order to find female companionship.
My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve never had any interest in watching in the 3+ decades since it came out even though I had heard about it.
I recently was convinced to watch it and figured that I have little to lose by checking t out.
The film is extremely silly yet it’s quite fun because of the slapstick humor that is sprinkled throughout.
Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans are all great as the aliens and they do a wonderful job making it seem as if they are experiencing Earthly objects and customs for the very first time.
It sometimes seems as if they just picked up random props along the way and use their improvisational talents to just let things go.
Geena Davis is fine in the lead role, but there is no question about the fact that she is left in the dust due to the performances of the comedic trio.
The plot of this film is quite silly but it has a certain charm about it that makes the viewer crack a smile more often than not largely due to the way they present things to us.
This is a movie that is a great example of an 80’s cult classic especially since it makes us crave the crazy days of that decade.
I can understand how this film could gather such a large cult following despite the fact that I can never imagine myself seeing this again.
Bottom Line – Pretty silly yet fun film. Great cast helps keep things enjoyable. Goldblum, Carrey and Wayans are all hilarious as the aliens and are able to do some wondrous slapstick with whatever props they found on the way. Davis is ok in the lead but she is constantly upstaged by this trio of comedians. The story is quite silly yet it still constantly makes one smile is spite of the stupidness of it all because things are presented in such a funny way. The film is a perfect example of an 80’s cult classic which is able to make us crave the 80’s once again. I can completely understand how a film like this could get a cult following even if I will probably never want to watch this again.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Much of the language that the aliens speak is actually just the dialogue being read backwards (this is particularly obvious with Wiploc during his conversations with Zeebo). For example, ‘from’ becomes “morf” and ‘females’ becomes “selamef”. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
