Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Jun 2019)

Brief Synopsis – During World War II, a Dutch resistance leader is sent on a mission to try and find out who is leaking secrets to the Germans.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before choosing it for this blogathon based solely on the fact that it had an intriguing title.

They do a wonderful job showing the kind of work done by the Dutch underground during the war and we get to see how urgent and suspenseful their missions were as they tried to undermined the efforts of their German occupiers.

The way that this film shows the the importance of their work is great and we get to see the efforts that they put forth in order to help pave the way for the Allies to regain control of their homeland.

This film also has a nice mystery within the plot as we try to learn who is delivering secrets to the enemy that is costing even more lives.

They leave some great clues for us along the way that keep things ambiguous which helps keep us trying to guess the culprit.

Clark Gable and Lana Turner are superb in the lead roles and have great chemistry throughout.

Victor Mature is also great here as a mysterious resistance leader who helps them with their endeavors.

Bottom Line – Great film that does a wonderful job showing the suspense and urgency of the resistance movement during the days where they were under German rule. The importance of their work is shown here as we get to see how they worked against the occupying forces in order to help pave the way for the Allies to regain control of their country. The mystery aspect of finding the traitor among them is done quite well because they leave enough clues for us to be suspicious of a number of different characters before the truth is finally revealed. Gable and Turner are great together in this film and have nice chemistry as resistance members. Mature is also great as the mysterious leader of the Underground.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Louis Calhern’s scenes were shot in Hollywood and added to the film after the main work on the film had been done in England. The British actors in the film had had no idea he was going to be in the film, as his character was not included in the script they had worked from. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)

  1. I saw this film years ago and I actually don’t remember it much. I do know it was bizarre seeing Lana Turner as a brunette. I’ll have to give it another watch, clearly!
