Number of Times Seen – Twice (Cable in the 80’s and 17 Jun 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A tough Detroit police detective tries to stop a businessman from causing havoc in the city as his competitors keep turning up dead.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing as a teenager on cable, but besides the fact that it stars Carl Weathers and takes place in Detroit (my home town), I couldn’t for the life of me remember anything else about it.
I now understand why.
This is a terrible film that fails to bring anything new or even interesting to the genre.
Weathers seems completely out of place as a lead role and cannot hold this film up as the main character.
This film is further proof that he should have stayed in the role of co-star where he was able to do better work like in the Rocky films or even Predator (1987).
Sharon Stone has a small role here and it was nice seeing her in such an early role, but she isn’t able to do much and fails to make any kind of real impact on this very thin story line.
Craig T. Nelson seems unfit to play an effective villain and most of his scenes are laughable since he truly was miscast in this role because he plays things too over the top and in a tame fashion.
The story itself feels very generic and moves along like a connect the dots puzzle and fails to bring anything new or unique to the genre since this film is ultimately quite silly and bland from start to finish.
Bottom Line – Terrible film that has nothing good about it. Weathers was never meant to be an action lead and this is further proof of that since he really cannot hold his own here. Stone is good here but her role is too small and doesn’t manage to make any kind of real impact on the very thin storyline. Nelson is ineffective as the villain and seems too tame to be playing such a character. The story moves along in a connect the dots way and never manages to feel as if its bringing anything new to the genre because it’s all much too bland and silly.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The studio hoped to turn the film into a franchise, but it never happened. Dangerous Passion (1990), a totally unrelated film which also starred Carl Weathers, was re-titled ‘Action Jackson 2’ in some countries. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
