Behind Enemy Lines (2001)

“We’re on recon so let’s recon something.” – Chris Burnett

Number of Times Seen – Twice (30 Jul 2002 and 1 Jul 2019)

Brief Synopsis – An American Naval aviator shot down over Serbia must find a way to survive and get to safety after militiamen begin to hunt him down.

My Take on it –  This is a film that I recall seeing not long after it came out on DVD and enjoying it even if the story itself is a bit shallow.

This film actually starts off quite well and helps establish the main character really well and the overall situation of things.

Unfortunately, around the midway point, the story goes too far downhill and manages to lose all of its credibility and plausibility which is quite a shame.

Owen Wilson is a great actor, but he feels a bit out of place in the role of a pilot trying to survive in enemy territory.

Gene Hackman is always great to see in films and this is no exception even if his character just needs to bark orders in a demanding way until they are following perfectly.

The villains in the film feel too much like typical villainous caricatures and we aren’t given enough of a reason as to why they do what they are doing because their characters are much too underdeveloped.

The action isn’t developed well enough and something constantly feels missing here.

The fact that this film is based on a true events doesn’t help make it any more engaging.

Bottom Line – Movie that starts off really well, but around the midway point, things go too far downhill and loses any real credibility and plausibility in the story. Wilson is good in the lead even though he feels a bit miscast in such a role. Hackman is also fine here and can always be counted upon to play an authority figure role and yell his orders until they are followed perfectly.  The villains feel like caricatures and are completely underdeveloped so that we don’t quite understand their true motivation in the extreme actions that they choose to take.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the football scene, the filmmakers actually tried to have the catapult shuttle kick the football off. Unfortunately, the shuttle completely obliterated the ball, forcing a Navy Master Chief to just chuck the ball in the air for the desired shot. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
