IO (2019)

“[in a letter to Elon] Earth is not dying, it’s being reborn. I know things aren’t easy on the IO Colony, but… please write back soon. I love you, Elon. From Earth until the end of the universe. -Sam.” – Sam

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Jul 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Following an event that made the Earth’s atmosphere toxic, a young scientist tries to find a way to make the planet inhabitable despite the fact that most people have already abandoned the planet and moved to live on IO, one of Jupiter’s moons.

My Take on it – This is a film that seemed by the premise to be interesting but in reality that is so far from the truth.

This was an extremely boring sci-fi film that fails to capture the audience’s attention because it fails to work on any level.

The premise isn’t utilized very well at all and the potential of this premise is wasted here.

The pacing of this film is really slow and the fact that it fails to go anywhere with the plot line doesn’t help at all.

The dialogue of this film is much too existential for its own good and dwells on the philosophical aspect of things instead of trying to help develop the characters so we can feel some kind of connection with them and truly care about what will end up happening to them.

The story is also underdeveloped and they could have doe so much more in order to make this movie powerful and meaningful yet the films seems to constantly miss all of those potential opportunities and instead give us something that feels filled with too much helium, like the balloon flown by one of the characters.

Bottom Line – Really boring sci-fi film that doesn’t work on any level. The overall premise and idea is actually an interesting one, but they fail to utilize this premise well enough. The story moves along at a snail’s pace and doesn’t end up going anywhere.  The dialogue deals with things too much on a existential level instead of trying to find a way for us to connect with these characters who aren’t developed well enough for us to care about them at all.  The story itself could have been better developed and more could have happened that would help make this film so much more powerful and meaningful yet they seem to miss all of those opportunities.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Io was the original title of Outland (1981) but at that time testing showed people read the name Io as 10, and so the name was changed. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
