Rocketman (2019)

“Real love’s hard to come by. So you find a way to cope without it” – Elton John

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Jul 2019)

Brief Synopsis – After Elton John attempts to take his own life, he is sent to therapy where he tries to understand how he got to this low point on his life.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been interested in seeing ever since I heard about it a few months ago especially given the fact that I’ve always been a fan of Elton John’s music.

This movie is an interesting biopic of part of the life of one of the most popular icons in the music industry.

The film is filled with great music that helps the flow of the story.

Taron Egerton is quite good in the lead role as John and the way he portrays the character seems to be just right for the flamboyant musician.

The story itself tho is presented in a very disjointed fashion and jumps around in time a bit too often.

This actually hurts things a bit because it is all shown in a fantastical way instead of the normal linear kind of story.

The songs are great here and I really liked the way that they had numerous characters singing each of the hit songs in a way that helps the story move along.

Unfortunately, like many biopics, this film stumbles because it tries too hard to cram in too much of a story into a run time that isn’t long enough.

They should have chosen a smaller segment of his life to show or shown a much more comprehensive story with a longer run time because the way it is done feels a bit too rushed which is a shame.

Bottom Line – Interesting biopic that has great music, but the narrative itself is quite flawed.  Egerton is quite good as John and gets the flamboyant personality just right. The story is presented in a disjointed way that hurts things a bit because it’s all shown in a fantastical way instead of via a nice linear story. The songs are great and I really loved the way that they have various characters sing the hit songs of John as the story moves along.  Like many biopics, they try to do too much with this story and instead of giving us a segment of his life, they try too hard to cram together too many episodes an all of them feel too rushed given the run time of the film which isn’t long enough to give us an even better sample of his life. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – One of the biggest challenges that Elton John faced in trying to get this project moving forward is that many producers told him they wanted to make a PG-13 rated film. John told them all the same thing: that he had not led a PG-13 life. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
