The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)

“All I want is a chance.” – Francis Ouimet

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Jul 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of an accomplished yet non-professional golfer who dreamed of playing in the US Open.

My Take on it – This film presents an interesting idea but it fails to capture the audience’s attention due to the fact that the story drags along too much which makes it even more difficult to try and follow the pace of things as presented.

They fail to develop the characters enough which results in the viewer not really caring who will win this golf tournament.

They manage to give us some quite clever camera shots of the golf games, but unfortunately, this film feels weighted down by the fact that they fail to make it seem more meaningful or interesting enough for the viewer to become engaged with the way the story is being told.

The cast of this film is fine, but none of the characters are given enough to do in order to make them shine among the pothers.

Ultimately, this film is a mediocre )at best) film about professional golf and there are other films about the sport that are able to be much more captivating and engaging than this film is

Bottom Line – Interesting idea, but this story drags along too much and that makes it harder to follow the slow pacing of things. The characters aren’t developed well enough and that hurts things a lot because it makes it much harder to care who will eventually win this golf tournament. Some of the camera shots are done quite cleverly, but overall, this story gets bogged down by the fact that it just doesn’t feel meaningful or interesting enough. The cast is fine, but none of them are able to shine here.  There are much better and more engaging films about golf tournaments that work better than this one does.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Filmed at the Kanawaki Golf Club outside Montreal, Quebec. The producers had the white clubhouse painted yellow for the film. Members liked the change so much they kept the color after filming. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
