Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Jul 2019)
Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of an American woman who traveled to visit her husband’s relatives in Iran with their daughter and needed to find a way to escape her oppressive husband and return home with her daughter.
My Take on it – This is a film I recall hearing about when it came out, but never really had the opportunity to see what it was all about until now.
The story is quite interesting and I highly doubt it would ever have been made if they waited a few more years because the subject matter has become quite controversial.
They do a great job telling this story in a very realistic fashion and they allow us to get a very clear understanding of the way that Iranian men treated their wives due to their very strict religious beliefs.
The fact that this is based on fact (obviously slightly embellished) makes the story even more powerful and gripping.
The cast of this film is superb and both Sally Field and Alfred Molina are amazing here in their respective roles.
It was also great seeing so many famous Israeli actors in key Iranian roles.
The story itself is told in a very poignant way which allows us to get so much insight in to the way that religion can sometimes get a grip on someone and make them live their lives in a very strict fashion even when they impose their views on others against their will.
It also shows us how much one can accomplish when faced with dire circumstances in life.
Bottom Line – Very interesting film that probably wouldn’t have been made just a few years later. The story is told in a very realistic and fresh way that makes us get a clear understanding of the oppressive rule Iranian men have on their wives due to their strict religious beliefs. The fact that this story is based on truth makes things even more powerful. The cast is superb and both Field and Molina shine here in these roles. It was also great seeing a slew of well known Israeli actors playing most of the Iranian characters. The story is quite poignant throughout and allows us insight into the power of religion on the way certan people live their lives. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the book, Betty Mahmoody and Mahtob escaped Iran thru the northern mountain regions in the dead of winter with severe ice and snow. The producers planned to film the escape scene in the Eilat Mountain in Southern Israel. However, there was no snow that winter and the escape scene was going to scrapped. Many protests arose because they felt the scene was essential. Sally Field even threatened to quit the project. The producers looked for other locations but either they were too expensive or unsafe for the actors and the crew. Finally, the scene was re written to have Betty Mahmoodey and Mahtob traveling thru the desert in searing heat. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
