Brief Synopsis – An LAPD Homicide detective tries the ear the name of his former partner who was murdered when he was off duty, working for a local bookie.
My Take on it –This is a film that I came across by accident while seeking out a film to watch for this blogathon and the premise piqued my interest.
They do a wonderful job portrayal a police procedural that seems well ahead of its time since it would take at least another decade until the idea became popular on TV.
Van Johnson is great in the lead here and makes us really believe his character in his quest for justice.
The added fact that we is developed quite well helps make the viewer care even more about what will happen to him as things move along.
This movie does a great job giving us an even better understanding about the dangers and hardships of this kind of profession.
We also get to see what kind of life they must lead in order to maintain such a difficult job.
They wisely give the viewer some nice clues along the way that help us create out own opinions about all that transpires as things move along at a great pace.
here are characters that feel as if they are caricatures or stereotypes, but thankfully, they don’t hurt things that much and still allow us to enjoy the intriguing mystery that is unfolding before our eyes.
Bottom Line – Great procedural that was well ahead of its time. Johnson is great in the lead and makes the viewer really care for the his character as things move along, The way that the film gives us a better understanding of the kind of life that a detective must lead in order to do his duty. Love the way that the story gives us little clues along the way in order to also help the viewer make an opinion as to what actually transpired. Some of the characters feel a bit stereotyped in their roles, but doesn’t hurt things too much, since the mystery is still quite intriguing to follow the whole way through. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The standard .38 Special cartridge has a 158 grain solid lead round nose bullet. Hollow pointed expanding bullets were not in really in use. They are a more modern invention staring in the 1960’s. Because they did not expand and were not that powerful, that is why the .357 was invented. The .357 Magnum was a .38 special case extended 1/10 of an inch. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
