The Debt (2010)

“Maybe it’s not always a blessing to survive.” – Stephan

Number of Times Seen – Twice (24 Nov 2011 and 12 Aug 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A former spy is haunted by an act from her past and must find a way to come to terms with events that happened 30 years earlier when new information surfaces.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw years ago and didn’t recall much about what it was all about, so I decided to revisit.

The story presented here is quite fascinating and they do a wonderful job showing us the way that a spy would have to live with the things that they did years earlier and reap the repercussions of those acts.

The story is able to move quite smoothly between the various timelines as we get to understand the complexities of the events that happened and how the ripple effect is able affect lives decades later.

The events are given to us in a slow deliberate fashion so that it helps enhance the suspense aspects of it all.

The cast of the film is great and it’s easy to believe that the actors playing the characters at various stages of their lives could conceivably be the same people.

Jessica Chastain, Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Sam Worthinton and Ciaran Hinds are all great here in their respective roles.

The plot has some great twists and turns along the way that adds so much to the thrilling and suspenseful aspects of the story from an espionage perspective.

The story is enjoyable from start to finish and remains quite intriguing the whole way through.

Bottom Line – Very fascinating story that allows us to see how a spy would have to live with their actions of the past. The story moves fluidly between the various timelines as things are revealed slowly.  The cast is great and it’s easy to believe that the actors portraying the characters at different stages of their lives are suppose to be the same people. The story is filled with some nice twists and turns that help make us understand the complexities of the espionage game while still keeping things enjoyable and thrilling the whole way through. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
