The Last Laugh (2019)

“I’m not a human being. I’m a comedian! ” – Max Becker

Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Aug 2019)

Brief Synopsis – An aging entertainment agent teams up with his first client who quite comedy 50 years earlier on a road trip in order to find a way to continue to work despite their age.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I came across by accident and knew very little about it besides the fact that it stars Chevy Chase and Richard Dreyfuss.

The two of them are great actors and the chemistry and energy that they have here is so enjoyable to watch unfold and helps keep things fun throughout.

The jokes used in the stand up routines are quite humorous and they manage to find a way to keep them feeling fresh and unique without seeming repetitive at all.

This film’s biggest issue though is the lack of chemistry between the two male lead and Andie McDowell who seems very miscast in this role.

Her scenes with the duo (especially Chase) seem too awkward for their own good and feel misplaced in this film.

This is a movie that has a great message about life and getting older and it resonates throughout.

This is a far from perfect film yet they find a way to make it come across as being quite poignant in its message and says so much about how we should all look at life.

Bottom Line – Chase and Dreyfuss are great together and allow this film to stay fun. The humor used for the standup seems fresh and unique and manages to stay funny and not repetitive. The problem here is that McDowell has no chemistry with Chase and their scenes together seem too awkward for their own good. The film has a great message about life and getting older.  Far from perfect, yet still quite poignant in what it is trying to say. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the scene at the comedy club in Lubbock Texas, when the old woman, Peaches Davis (II) throws the beer bottle (a rubber prop) at Richard Dreyfuss, on the 1st take the bottle struck Dreyfuss squarely in the crotch! The entire cast and crew, including Dreyfuss, was laughing so hard it was several minutes before shooting could resume. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
