“You’re gonna have a problem walking straight if you don’t take your hands off my daughter. ” – Arlo
Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Aug 2019)
Brief Synopsis – After being fired from his job, an engineer gets anew job which requires him and his family to move across the country.
My Take on it – As a fan of Richard Pryor and his comedy, I was intrigued to see what this film was all about.
Unfortunately, it’s horrendous and fails to work on any level.
The joke are terrible and most of what happens makes the viewer want to cry more than laugh because it’s so silly.
Pryor is usually quite funny in his films, but in this one, he plays his character so poorly that it’s a shame to watch it all happen.
The story itself makes so little sense and they try to make things crazier and crazier as the plot moves along.
This makes things even more convoluted and silly which is torturous to watch.
This film’s premise is actually a good one that in more capable hands could have come across as being funnier or if they went the dramatic route, it could have been more enjoyable that way too, but as a comedy like this, it fails miserably.
The only high point of this film is seeing a very young Dana Carvey in a great role that is perfect for him because he gets to use his chameleon ability to make the character work so well no matter what they ask him to do along the way.
Bottom Line – Terrible film that doesn’t work at all. Pryor is usually funny in his films, but the way that he plays this character is far from funny and in most instances it’s downright sad. The story makes no sense what so ever and things get crazier and crazier as they move along which takes so much away from what could have been a potentially good story. The best part of this film is seeing a very young Carvey in a very strange yet perfect role for him.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Richard Pryor’s last solo starring vehicle. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
