Brief Synopsis – Three astronauts on a planned mission to Mars are caught up in a government cover up and try to find a way to bring the story to the public despite elements in the government who are trying to silence them.
My Take on it – I love a great conspiracy theory and this film gives us just that.
The idea that NASA and high levels of the government could be a part of such a cover up like this one is quite plausible and that makes this film even more enjoyable to watch unfold.
The scenario and ideas resented here are quiterealistic and seem as believable now as they probably were back when this was made.
The cast is superb and it’s fun to see that the two leads are both husandans of Bara=bara Streisand – Elliott Gould and James Brlin.
Loved seeing both OJ Simpson and Sam Waterston in small supporting roles as astronauts.
This is a movie filled with some great chase scenes that help keep the thrills and suspense alive throughout the film.
The musical score is also great since it allows things to remain suspenseful as we get deeper and deeper into a conspiracy theory stry that reaches up to high levels of the government.
What’s also superb (and scary at the same time) about this film is that once they explain the reasoning behind the planned deception, it actually makes sense from a very twisted perspective because it really could happen and possibly be executed properly k done right.
Bottom Line – Great conspiracy theory story that comes across as so realistic. The scenario and ideas brought forth in this story are quite conceivable and were as plausible when this film was made as they are now. Amazing cast led by two of Barbara Streisand’s husbands – Elliott Gould and James Brolin. Simpson and Waterston are also both great in supporting roles as fellow astronauts. The film has some great chase scenes and is able to keep the thrills and suspense going all of the way until the very end. The music helps keep thing suspenseful as we get embroiled in a conspiracy theory tale that reaches up to the high levels of government. The way that they explain the reasoning behind the deception is scary because it seems so simple and makes sense from a very twisted perspective. Recommended!

We can break out the “Irony-o-meter” for the fact that two of the three astronauts in Capricorn One were played by O.J. the future felon and Sam Waterston, who would spend the better part of two decades playing District Attorney Jack McCoy on “Law and Order.”

You mentioned the film’s excellent score twice and I agree – I have the soundtrack album. You failed to mention the score’s composer – the legendary Jerry Goldsmith.This is a terrific movie. Taut and suspenseful. A neat idea well executed by Peter Hyams and a terrific cast. Savalas is a hoot as the crop duster pilot.
