Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Sep 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A divorcee keeps her sanity by going out to single’s clubs to dance while trying to find happiness in her life.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about when it came out last year and actually was told by a number of people that it was quite good.
I finally got a chance to see it and I have to whole heartedly disagree with those sentiments.
This movie has a very interesting premise which starts off well but somehow gets lost along the way and doesn’t manage to find a way to recover.
Julianne Moore is an amazing actress and she works well in the lead role here.
We can understand why her character acts the way that she does and has great chemistry with her costar John Turturo who is also great here in this role which is very different from what we are used to seeing him do.
The film’s story has an interesting message, but once things get really crazy around the mid point, it loses all its traction and fails to realize the kind of potential that they could have brought forth here.
Too many scenes in the film seem to meander along and make the viewer lose interest in what is transpiring which in some cases doesn’t seem to g anywhere interesting.
This is all quite unfortunate since this movie has lots more potential than they manage to realize largely due to the fact that it seems as if they try too hard to make things feel much more poignant.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that starts off well but loses it’s way by the midway point. Moore is quite impressive in this role and has great chemistry with Turturro throughout. The story seems to have an intriguing message but things get much too muddled towards the end and fails to find a way to be poignant as it could be. There are too many scenes that just meander along and don’t seem to really try to go anywhere. This is all quite unfortunate because the film seems to try much too hard to be meaningful and in the end just doesn’t work at all.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – English version remake of the Chilean film, Gloria, from the same director. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
