Gone in Sixty Seconds (1974)

“Sir? What happened to your car? ” – Car Wash Attendant

“Well, you know… parking lot attendants.” – Maindrian Pace

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Sep 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A car thief is hired to steal 48 cars for a drug dealer and manages to get them all quite easily but the final one is the most difficult for him and his crew to acquire.

My Take on it – This is a film that I watched with very low expectations since I knew it has a very thin and shallow plot.

They somehow were able to take that and use it to their advantage as we get to see such a fun and entertaining story blossom in front of our eyes.

The movie ha no stars in it and the entire cast are completely unfamiliar faces that help add to the realism of it all since they all seem like regular people instead of actors.

The film is filled with some amazing car chases and crashes that are so exciting to watch since they are able to give us so much variety in the kind of damage and ways of impact that these cars have along the way.

The film has a 40 minute car chase that somehow is choreographed so well that it stays quite plausible that something like this could conceivably occur and it is quite breathtaking watching it all unfold before us.

This is a film that definitely earns its cult status despite being quite shallow on story and real character development because its simplicity helps make it so much more enjoyable to watch on screen.

This movie must have been a pure joy watching on a big screen in a theater and it’s amazing seeing how many cars get destroyed here.

The car wash scheme is so much fun to watch.

Bottom Line – Such a fun and entertaining film that was so different from I had expected. The cast is filled with complete unknowns and that actually helps make things feel even more realistic since we aren’t dealing with familiar faces the whole time. The car chases and wrecks in this movie are extremely exciting to watch and the 40 minute climax is completely breathtaking since it plausibly keeps going the despite so many pauses along the way.  I can understand how a film with a super-thin plot like this can gain cult status espeially given the sheer amount of cars that get destroyed during the car chase. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This 97-minute movie contains 93 car crashes. (From IMDB)
