Number of Times Seen – Twice (20 Jun 2001 and 11 Sep 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A computer programmer is recruited by the most powerful computer company in the world yet doesn’t realize the dangerous world he has now entered.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing not long after it came out.
For it’s time, it seems quite relevant and was able to utilize current events in creating an interesting premise.
Unfortunately, this come across as being a bit too campy along the way and an idea that might have worked better 18 years ago, just doesn’t work well enough today.
The cats is quite talented and both Ryan Phillipe and Tim Robbins bring forth their best, but the characters start off strong yet fizzle away as the story moves forward.
Robbins’ impersonation of Bill Gates is pretty good though despite this.
This, in turn causes both of them to eventually deliver very over the top and stereotypical characters.
The movie is able to throw in some nice surprises along the way that make the viewer keep guessing about what is truly going on, but overall, even those moments feel too little, too late.
The story itself is meant to be a cyber thriller, yet it fails to really keep the suspense aspect of things work which is quite unfortunate.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that comes across as being a bit too campy and doesn’t work as well as one would hope it could. Phillipe and Robbins are both fine here, but their performances that start off well get a bit over the top and stereotypical as the story moves along. The story isn’t thrilling enough and the parts that are meant to be suspenseful fall short along the way. The film does manage a few nice surprises that help add a bit to the story, but are just too little too late.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – What appears in the beginning credits around the title and the actors’ names is HTML code, with some alterations. Much of the HTML is taken from the Internet Movie Database’s homepage. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
