Genre Guesstimation – Life Itself (2018)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Carl of Listening to Film and we will be reviewing our favorite Ensemble Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Sep by sending them to

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Carl!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Ensemble Movies.

“Unreliable Narrator!… Unreliable Narrators are considered a device, right? Don’t answer. They are. They are and they don’t get a lot of literary analysis because it’s a gimmick. It’s a trick. I mean Canterbury Tales gets a shoutout because, you know, it’s good but typically it’s used for popcorn crime novels and thriller movies Agatha Christie, Usual Suspects, so on and so forth. But I’m going to argue that every narrator by its very definition is unreliable because when you tell a story there’s always an essential distance between the story itself and the telling of said story, right? So therefore every story that has ever been told has an Unreliable Narrator. The only truly reliable narrator would be someone hypothetically telling a story that unfolds before our very eyes which is obviously very impossible SO what does that tell us? That the only truly reliable narrator is life itself. But life itself is also completely unreliable because it is constantly misdirecting and misleading us and taking us on this journey where it is literally impossible to predict where it is going to go next… Life as the ultimate Unreliable Narrator.” – Abby

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Sep 2019)

Brief Synopsis – The love story of a young couple is chronicled as they must deal with the twists and turns that life gives us all along the way.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing the trailer for last year, yet had no clue what it was all about.

The story is so interesting and it draws the viewer in immediately and doesn’t let go until the very end of this amazing roller coaster ride.

The story is extremely unique and they are able to tell such an intriguing and gripping story really well.

The characters are expertly developed and they find a way to move between the various characters really fluidly despite the story seeming to sometimes be disconnected.

The fact that we never truly know where the story is heading helps make things even more interesting to watch unfold.

Love the way that the film’s thesis about the narrator never being reliable is so true both in the world within the movie and within our own world.

This allows them to throw so many twists and turns into the story that are all quite unexpected.

The cats of this film is amazing and filled with some really talented actors.

This movie is a prime example of a great ensemble film since despite having so many talented actors in it, the real main character is the story itself which weaves a great web between all of these various characters.

This allows them to tell such a gripping and interesting story that doesn’t let up from start to finish.

This is a movie that I definitely would love to watch again in order to try and catch all that I missed along the way that is only apparent once we get to the very end of things.

This film will definitely now break into my top ten of 2018!

Bottom Line – Amazing film that is so unique in the way that it tells this very intriguing story. The characters are all developed really well and the way that the story moves through the various story lines of the different characters stays quite intriguing since we never know where the story is truly going, The film’s premise about the narrator being unreliable works both within the world of the film and within our own world which helps the film throw so many twists and turns along the way that one doesn’t quite expect. The cast is amazing and this is a great example of an ensemble film because it deals with so many characters throughout the course of the film that it isn’t necessarily clear throughout who the main character is meant to be.  In actuality, the main character is the overall story and it is all told in such a gripping way that works so well from start to finish. Highly Recommended!
