Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Sep 2019)
Brief Synopsis – Enemies Shaw and Hobbs must work together in order to try and stop a deadly threat to the world.
My Take on it – After having seen all of the other films in this franchise, I knew that I would eventually see this one even though it is already known what one can expect from these kind of films that they seem to churn out every two years or so.
This is a fun addition to the franchise and largely works due to the very different personalities of the two main characters who stand out the most among all of the various characters of the franchise.
Unfortunately, the film fails to really give us anything fresh or unique that differentiates it from other film sin the Fast & Furious franchise.
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are both quite enjoyable together largely because they are so very different.
They are able to form a good team since they are complete opposites and the rivalry between them helps them each use so many diverse methods in trying to accomplish their mission.
This also allows for some fun surprises along the way.
The story is quite shallow and feels a bit too generic and unfortunately has very little to offer besides the expected explosions of a film in this genre and series.
Bottom Line – Fun addition to the franchise due the action scenes and chemistry between the characters but it offers nothing really fresh or unique to the Fast and Furious Franchise. Johnson and Statham are enjoyable together because they are complete opposites and help form a great team since their rivalry and different methods add some nice surprises along the way. The story tho feels a bit too generic and doesn’t manage to offer very much beyond the expected explosions along the way.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The idea of a “Fast & Furious” spin-off featuring Hobbs and Shaw first emerged during filming of “The Fate of the Furious,” after producers and studios execs took note of the comedic chemistry between the two throughout their scenes together. Plans to actually develop the spin-off were informally green-lit towards the end of filming, and they were later revealed to be the reason behind the much-discussed animosity that emerged between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson in the final week of production – which resulted in Diesel reportedly canceling some of Johnson’s scenes (which was within his purview as one of the movie’s executive producers) and not showing up for filming at all on at least one day of production, leaving hundreds of cast and crew sitting idle. After news of the spin-off became public, co-stars Michelle Rodriguez (Letty) and Tyrese Gibson (Roman) publicly criticized it for damaging the F&F “family” as well as pushing back the release of the series’ ninth installment by at least a year. As of February 2019, Johnson has stated he will “probably not” return for “Fast & Furious 9” but would consider it for the 10th in the series. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
