The Shadow (1994)

“I’ll be there… around every corner… in every empty room… as inevitable as your guilty conscience…” – The Shadow

Number of Times Seen – Twice (Theater in ’94 and 23 Sep 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A mysterious crime fighter in New York during the 1930’s, must stop an evil genius from creating an Atomic Bomb.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing in the theater when it came out and not being very impressed by it.

That feeling hasn’t changed after this re-watch.

This is a really boring, silly and pointless superhero film that fails to work on any level.

Alec Baldwin seems very miscast as the lead character and it’s so hard to take him seriously in this role.

The story line is extremely superficial and fails to have any kind of depth in the way that it presents things to us.

The supporting cast of this film is actually quite talented with Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle, John Lone, Jonathan Winters, Ian McKellen and Tim Curry yet they all feel completely wasted here since they aren’t given enough to do with their characters.

The dialogue is extremely campy and makes this feel like a comedy instead of a suspenseful superhero film that is based on the kind of cliffhanger characters and scenarios of the radio days of the 1930’s and 40’s.

Bottom Line – Really boring and silly superhero film. Baldwin seems very miscast in the lead and it’s quite hard to take him seriously in this role. The story is to superficial and lacks any kind of real depth in the way that it presents things. The supporting cast has some great talent, yet they all seem wasted here. The dialogue is much too campy for its own good and makes this feel too much like a comedy instead of a superhero film based on the kind of cliffhanger characters and story lines of days gone by.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The billboard of the “Smoking man” is a parody of a real one that actually blew “smoke” rings. The original was for Camel cigarettes, whose motto was “I’d walk a mile for a Camel!” The “Llama” cigarette motto parodies this with “I’d climb a mountain for a Llama!” (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
