Did They Get it Right? – Best Actress – Oscars 2013

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Amy Adams (American Hustle)
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
Judi Dench (Philomena)
Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)

Biggest Snub:

Emma Thompson – Saving Mr. Banks

My Overall Thoughts:

This was a year with some good performances, but one of them was the front runner throughout the awards season and was the expected winner barring any last minute upset.

My Rankings:

Actress

5. Meryl Streep
4. Amy Adams
3. Judi Dench
2. Sandra Bullock
1. Cate Blanchett

Movies

5. American HustleSuperb acting and an above average story make for an interesting movie, but something is still missing that would make it even more enjoyable and engaging.
4. Blue JasmineNot one of Allen’s best (IMHO) there are a few funny lines and situations.  Blanchett makes it worth while to see tho.
3. August: Osage CountyGreat script and dialogue by Tracy Letts. Acted expertly by this all star cast.
2. PhilomenaVery moving story that would be much more unbelievable if we didn’t know it was true. Acting is superb and the message of the movie is clear. Powerful story but still lacks an emotional connect that feels missing along the way.
1. GravityGreat story that works on so many levels. Clooney and Bullock are superb in this film and the fact that they are essentially alone throughout the film shows how great they are as actors. Bullock was deservingly nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for this performance. This film is a perfect example of the way that a movie can properly integrate live action with special effects in order to enhance the story. The extensive use of effects is almost invisible here which shows how seamlessly they are inserted into this story. The plot is excellent and they find a way to keep things gripping for the very intense entire 90 minute run time of the film. The dialogue is great because it helps us get a much deeper understanding of the characters as they discuss their lives while trying to extricate themselves from this very dangerous situation. Clooney’s character is able to keep his calm demeanor throughout the entire film which helps give both us and Bullock’s character an anchor as things get very thrilling and suspenseful along the way. Very deserving of its Oscar nomination for Best Picture but unfortunately it wasn’t able to win that award along with its win for Best Director and 6 other technical categories making it the biggest winner that year.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Yep!  CB was the front runner throughout the awards season and it wasn’t much of a surprise that she won since her character is quite interesting to watch as things unfold.

Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!
