“Let me get this straight. You both went to the same school. Yet someone came back with a degree that’s useful, and the other one came back as Asian Ellen.” – Wye Mun Goh
Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Oct 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A young Economics Professor travels to Singapore in order to meet the family of her boyfriend.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about last year when it came out yet never had much of a desire to see what it was all about.
I finally decided to see why this film has so much hype and was not disappointed in the least.
They manage to find a way to create a fun and enjoyable Romantic comedy despite its formulaic plot and story.
he way that the plot flows stays fresh throughout and works on numerous levels.
They manage to develop these characters really well and despite the fact that many of them feel quite stereotypical, they find a way to allow this stereotypical feeling to enhance our perception of them all.
They also find a way to show how the wealthy can be treated by some as royalty while others are less effected by riches and jewels.
The movie has a great cast and they manage to keep thing fun and enjoyable the whole way through despite the predictability of the genre.
This film is based on a trilogy of novels and due to the success of this film, they are supposedly filming a sequel.
I can’t wait to see where thy take this story next.
Bottom Line – Really fun modern Romantic comedy that works on so many levels. The characters are all developed really well even if they all seem a bit too stereotypical because that also helps enhance our perception of them all. The film does a great job showing how the wealthy are sometimes treated as royalty by some yet aren’t affected by others. The cast is great and despite the story being very predictable like most stories of this genre, it still finds lots of ways to stay fresh and entertaining along the way. Can’t wait to see where the sequel will take these characters next. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Jon M. Chu revealed that Michelle Yeoh was dissatisfied with the mock-up ring that her character, Eleanor, was going to wear. She showed him a ring from her personal collection and this eventually became the emerald and diamond ring Eleanor wears in the movie. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)

Okay, I really need to see this movie. I do love romcoms but missed this one by chance, and I’ve always wondered if the stellar reviews were just hype. I need to see it for myself!
