Cleo From 5 to 7 (1962)

“Everybody spoils me. Nobody loves me.” – Cleo

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Oct 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A young women tries to pass the time as she awaits results from a medical test that worries her.

My Take on it – This film is another one that I knew nothing about before watching and only chose to watch it due to the premise which sounded interesting.

The concept of this film is an intriguing one yet they fail to make it work properly since they never make the main character sympathetic enough along the way.

They do a nice job remaining focused on the one character throughout the film yet we never feel as if they develop her character enough for us to really care about what will happen to her.

Her moods and opinions keep changing and evolving depending on who she meets while waiting for possible life changing news.

The various conversations that she has with both people she knows and with strangers all turn to a similar theme about life and its meaning and other existential ideas.

Unfortunately tho, these kind of discussions don’t allow us to care more for this seemingly superficial character who is understandably only concerned about herself despite all of the turmoil going on around her in Paris, in France, in French Wars and overall in the world.

Her quick friendship with the soldier towards the end helps give her some kind of anchor in life, but even that isn’t enough to help make this film even more enjoyable to watch despite it trying so hard to be much more meaningful that it manages to bring forth.

Bottom Line – Intriguing concept that doesn’t work as well as one could hope. The film does a nice job focusing on the main character as her moods keep changing depending on what she does during this story as it unfolds in near real time.  Her various conversations with acquaintances and even with strangers constantly lead to discussions about the meaning of life and other existential ideas yet fails to help make us care even more for this character and her plight throughout.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Takes place on a Tuesday afternoon, however the German title translates to “Wednesday from 5 to 7.” (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
