A Guide For The Married Man (1967)

“Basic Principle number one: Never, NEVER say you’ll be where you can be found not to be.” – Ed Stander

Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Oct 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A business gets tips from friends on how to successfully begin an affair without your spouse ever finding out.

My Take on it – This is another film that I knew nothing about before watching it and was quite surprised by it all.

The story is told in a hilarious way that takes a pretty absurd premise and finds a way to keep it interesting for 90 minutes of non stop humor.

The cast of this film is superb and the plethora of famous cameos helps make this even more fun to watch as the viewer attempts to identify and recognize all of the famous people who spend a few minutes (if that) on screen.

This film was directed by Gene Kelly and works really well from start to finish.

The plot itself is quite repetitious the whole way through yet they find ways to keep it fresh and fun by the use of some very ingenious tricks to show us how these various scenarios all play out.

Walther Matthau is a great actor and does a fine job in the lead role yet he might have been even better suited to play the “teacher” instead of the “student” because it seems much more connected to his onscreen personality that we know and love

Bottom Line – Very funny film that has an absurd premise yet works so well due to its stellar cast along with the endless number of cameos. The plot seems a bit repetitive along the way yet finds a way to stay fresh due to the very ingenious ways that they show all of the various scenarios played out. Matthau is fine in the lead but he might have been even better as the friend.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Each celebrity who did a cameo was paid ten thousand dollars for two days work (including The Turtles, who sang the title song). If anyone was required to work for more than two days, they were to receive an extra ten thousand dollars. No one went overtime. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)

  1. I remember this one. Fondly. And the Turtles song too! Some very funny bits. The one that sticks out for me is when Matthau’s caught in bed by his wife and just keeps denying everything to her face while he and the other woman get dressed. She leaves, he makes the bed – and his wfe is so confused that she asks what he wants for dinner. And I haven’t seen the movie in decades.
