Dear Diary (1996)

“Why do we women do this? Dress in pairs. habit? vanity? zippers?” – Annie

Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – As her 40th birthday grows closer, a fashion editor decides to begin creating a diary of her daily events.

My Take on it – This is a short film that I came across by accident and the background story of how it actually came to be fascinated me to the point that I was curious to watch it.

They do a great job here creating interesting characters and situations and I still quite shocked that this failed to make it beyond the pilot stage of TV shows.

The story allows us to get in to the mind of the main character and it works quite well in helping us feel her experiences as they are happening.

Bebe Neuwirth is great in the lead and is quite reminiscent of future and past TV leading ladies who play these kind of character who narrate to us the events of their lives as if they were reading from their journal or diary.

Love the fact that this film won an Oscar for Best Short Film after it was rejected as the pilot of a TV show by the networks because it says so much about the quality of a somewhat bookended story as opposed to the story of a TV sow which is constantly evolving due to the need to create so many more story lines along the way.

Bottom Line – Interesting film that works quite well and it’s somewhat shocking that it wasn’t able to make it beyond the pilot stage. The characters are interesting and the way that the story allows us to get into the mind of this character works really well. Neuwirth is great in the lead and was the right choice to play this character especially since she is reminiscent of future TV leading ladies who have similar shows that actually were picked up. Loved the fact that this went on to become an Oscar winner for Best Short film after failing to be picked up by the networks as a regular TV show. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – A rejected pilot for a network comedy series, it became not only an Oscar winner for Best Short Film, but it became the first DreamWorks production to win an Oscar. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
