“It’s been a long time Ponch!” – John Baker
Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Nov 2019)
Brief Synopsis – The famous California Highway Patrol duo are back together as partners as they try and stop a car theft ring.
My Take on it – This is a film that I was quite interested in seeing especially since I was a huge fan of the TV series it was a continuation of.
Back in the late 90’s, many TV shows from the 70’s and 80’s made reunion movies to give us updates on what had happened to the characters since the shows had ended.
CHiPS is no exception.
They made this reunion film that works quite well due to the fact that the manage to rekindle the spar and tone of the show while also updating it for the the 90’s.
Many of the characters from the show return and they even use flashbacks from the show to help establish them all.
Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada have great chemistry together and it is quite nostalgic in the way that we get to once again see the camaraderie that they had together which helps make the show so much fun to watch.
The plot itself is quite simplistic yet they find ways to keep the story enjoyable and thrilling throughout.
This helps make this film even more entertaining to watch unfold.
In addition to the normal tone of things, they manage to add in some nice dramatic scenes that helps establish all that these characters have gone through in the years since we last saw them which adds a whole new level t the story.
Bottom Line – Great seeing the return of these characters. The film keeps the original tone of the show and brings back many of the characters that were a large part of what made this show so entertaining. Wilcox and Estrada once again have great chemistry and this helps give us the feel of the camaraderie that they had during the original run of the TV show. The plot is a bit simplistic but they find ways to keep things enjoyable and thrilling which helps things so much. The movie also manages to give us so nice dramatic moments between the characters as we learn what happened to them over the course of time since the show ended. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The computer in the “million dollar concept car” that requires a PIN is actually a “Sharp el-6560” memo-master personal data assistant. If you look closely, you can see buttons for the different days of the week on the buttons. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
