Number of Times Seen – At least 3 times (Cable in the 80’s, 27 Feb 2001 and 4 Nov 2019)
Brief Synopsis – An aspiring cartoonist and his frigidness try to help a musician deal with problems with her landlord.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing back when I was a kid on cable, but didn’t recall anything about the plot, so I decided to check it out again.
I’ve always been a fan of John Cusack’s work as an actor and I hoped that this film would give him the same kind of spotlight that he had in Better Off Dead (1985).
Unfortunately, this film is atrocious and fails to work on any level.
His character comes across as being pretty boring to watch which is quite a shame.
Demi Moore and Bobcat Goldthwait are both fun to watch in a few of their scenes, but overall even they can’t help make this film any more interesting to watch.
The story fails to be innovative or fresh in any way and this movie comes across as a poorly written 80’s teen comedy that limps along for 90 minutes.
There are so many better films that were made at this time, and this one is no even close to being near the top of the list.
Bottom Line – Terrible film that doesn’t work on any level despite the very talented cast. Cusack’s character unfortunately doesn’t feel fresh or innovative and falls into the pitfall of many 80’s comedies where they seem too generic. Supporting characters Moore and Goldthwait are both fun to watch in certain scenes, but neither of them is able to make things more interesting at all. Not even close to being in the realm of the best films of this genre.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Savage Steve Holland did the animation for the film. He was upset that film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert roasted his earlier John Cusack film, Better Off Dead… (1985). The two animated bunnies that get blown up at the end of this movie bear a strong (and not accidental) physical resemblance to the movie critics. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
