The Good Catholic (2017)

“[Choir practice, starts singing Amazing Grace with Father Ollie, then breaks into a rap version] There’s a descent case for blasphemy here.” – Victor

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A young priest begins to question his faith when he meets a troubled girl in confession.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about when it came out a few years ago yet never really had much of a desire to watch it.

On a whim, I decided to try and see what it was all about.

The premise is somewhat intriguing yet they don;t manage to allow things to work since they seem to mix and match various themes in the story that just don’t work well together in most cases.

They have one or two scenes where they succeed in making this move forward but in general, they just fall flat.

The film has some good dialogue and there are a few conversations that bring things to the table, but overall, that too just doesn’t reach par which is quite frustrating to watch.

The film fails to develop these characters well enough and instead of coming across as genuine or real people, the feel like caricatures and stereotypes which doesn’t help make things more enjoyable to watch unfold.

Really was socked to see Danny Glover and John C. McGinley in this film, but they both are limited to a few small scenes.

Had their parts been more prominent, it might have made this film more interesting to follow.

Bottom Line – This is a strange film because it tries to mix together various themes are are very difficult to meld and unfortunately it only manages to work in a few scenes along the way. The dialogue is good and in some cases helps advance the story, but in others just makes things even more frustrating to watch unfold. The characters aren’t developed well enough and despite good intentions all around, they all come across as being quite like caricatures instead of well developed characters who feel realistic and tangible.  Glover and McGinley are very underused and if they appeared in more scenes maybe this film would be enjoyable to watch unfold.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This movie was filmed in Bloomington Indiana. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
