Young Doctors in Love (1982)

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Spoof of medical dramas and soap operas in the spirit of the Airplane movies.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about when it came out and for some reason I always assumed that it was a very risque film.

I finally decided to give it a shot and find out what it was all about.

As a fan of the style of comedic films like Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988), I expected something so much more funnier than they end up giving us here.

The jokes are terrible and fall completely flat both whether they are physical or verbal style of comedy.

The various situations that most of these characters find themselves in also aren’t very funny and don;t manage to help make this enjoyable to watch.

The film has an all-star cast of actors who had yet to make a splash and unfortunately none of them are able to find a way to make this film more watchable.

I was surprised to see that this was Director Garry Marshall’s initial film as director and even with his abilities, he can’t make this film any better.

The one good thing here is that we finally get to see the very first collaboration between Hector Elizondo and Marshall and following his performance in this film, Marshall used him as his good luck charm as gave him a role in EVERY  subsequent film that he directed.

Bottom Line – Terrible spoof movie that fails to be funny in most of the various situations that it puts its characters in. The cast is great but they lack proper comic timing and most of their antics and jokes fall flat. Surprised that even with Marshall at the helm, they couldn’t make this film any more memorable or enjoyable to watch.  Nice finally seeing why Marshall felt that Elizondo was his lucky charm and ended up appearing in EVERY one of his movies as director.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The orphans that Stephanie (Sean Young) teaches to dance wear t-shirts. Looking closely, they say: UNDERPRIVILEGED KID, BROKEN HOME, ORPHAN, INCORRIGIBLE, WELFARE RECIPIENT and MOTHER IS A DISC JOCKEY. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
