Fatal Beauty (1987)

“Fine if you don’t mind getting your ass chewed. Fortunately I have more ass than he’s got teeth.” – Rita

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A police detective in the narcotics division does all she can to try and stop the circulation of a deadly new drug.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about when it came out, yet never had much of a desire to see what it was all about.

The film is quite fun yet feels much too generic for its own good.

Whoopi Goldberg is really enjoyable in the lead role, but the way she acts and talks makes this film seem too much like a female version of Beverly Hills Cop (1984) which is quite unfortunate because it lacks the feel of something fresh and unique.

As a fan of Sam Elliott, I loved seeing him here even if his character seems more like a tag along sidekick instead of a full fledged partner in crime.

The chemistry between his character and Whoopi’s is much too tame and that hurts the realism of the friendship between these two characters (see Trivia Section below).

Harris Yulin is a laughable villain and fails to add anything that would make this story more enjoyable to watch.

Ruben Blades is also great as Goldberg’s partner despite the fact that his character isn’t developed well enough and seems too much like a caricature.

Bottom Line – Fun film that feels much too generic. Goldberg is enjoyable in the lead role but unfortunately this film’s story and premise makes things seem too much like a female version of Beverly Hills Cop (1984) instead of something fresh and unique. Elliott is great as always but the chemistry between his character and Goldberg’s is tamed down too much to a point where it doesn’t make enough sense (see Trivia Section below). Yulin is a weak villain and doesn’t add much to this story. Loved seeing Blades in this film as Goldberg’s partner even if his character is a bit too underdeveloped.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – A love scene was filmed between Sam Elliott and Whoopi Goldberg, but was cut from the final edit. The kiss he gives her at the end hints at the relationship as it was originally scripted. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
