Ghosts of the Abyss (2003)

“The crucial thing about deep-sea photography is lighting.” – Bill Paxton

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the journey taken by James Cameron and Bill Paxton as they went exploring the bottom of the Ocean to look at the Titanic.

My Take on it – This is one of only two documentaries that Director James Cameron has made.

It is solely dedicated to one of his great films that told the tale of what happened on the fateful maiden voyage of the ship of dreams.

Love the fact that both Cameron and one of his stars, Bill Paxton took on the endeavor to go explore the real ship that still lies at the bottom of the ocean.

They do a great job showing how making the film Titanic (1997) was such a poignant experience for both of these men and visiting the underwater grave of this ship affected both of them in ways that they couldn’t imagine.

This film shows us the connections between the actual events and what was filmed in the movie which adds a whole new level to both the story of the two films.

The message of the story of this ship is told in a very unique way and is enhanced by actually being able to see the wreckage as things are being discussed.

The film gives the viewer a unique perspective of the wreckage as they make us feel as if we are right there with them as they use technology to show us so much of the ship.

Bottom Line – Great documentary that shows how after filming such a poignant film for these two men that they can actually go and explore the ruins of this ship. The movie does a great job showing us the various connections between the movie and the real ship which adds a whole new level to the way one can look at both the film Titanic (1997) and the message of that fateful event. The film gives us a very unique perspective of things taht allows us to see the wreckage from the eyes of these explorers and their crew. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The two robotic submarines in the film are named Jake and Elwood, a reference to The Blues Brothers (1980). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (?/10)
