Marriage Italian Style (1964)

“The more the world changes, the more it stays the same. Houses, palaces, skyscrapers. And in the middle… an old story like ours.” – Domenico Soriano

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A wealthy man who has a connection with a local prostitute is tricked into marrying her when she claims that she is on her deathbed.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before coming across it during my journey to watch all films that have received nominations for its cast members at the Oscars.

As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of Foreign language films, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I decided to still try and give it a shot.

The film is quite fun and gives us a very zany perspective on marriage that is filled with some very funny and entertaining characters.

Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren are perfect together and have such electric chemistry together.

They are able to keep things both engaging and light the whole way through which helps make this so enjoyable to watch unfold.

Each of these characters knows how to “pull the strings” of the other one and back them into a corner which keeps them on edge the entire time.

The story as presented is quite a silly and extreme way yet as a comic look at marriage it still works even under these circumstances.

Loren was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her work here, yet she had some very tough competition that year and didn’t stand much of a chance of repeating her win a few years earlier.

Bottom Line – Fun film that works because of the zaniness of the characters and story line. Mastroianni and Loren have great chemistry together and know how to keep things engaging and light the whole way through.  They each know how to pull the strings of the other and allow for us to see them on-edge.  The story itself may be a bit silly and extreme but as a comic look at marriage it definitely works well. Loren was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her work in this film.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the movie the house of Filumena and Domenico is located in “Piazza del Gesù”, a known square in the historic center of Naples. The scene where Filumena leaves the lawyer’s office was filmed in “Piazza Bellini.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
