At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal (2019)

“May God bless your dark, broken soul.” – Trinea Gonczar

Number of Times Seen – 1 (16 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – In depth look at the abuse of hundreds of gymnasts by their trainer for the US Olympic team which went unreported for decades.

My Take on it – This is a documentary that I came across entirely by accident and was floored by the story being told.

They find a way to get to the very heart of the issues faced here and are able to show how systematic this abuse was over the course of decades.

The film also does a great job explaining why it took so long for these women to finally feel safe to tell their stories since they were always in fear of losing their ability to continue participating in the sport.

The amount of stories that this film is able to tell us is astounding and we get viewpoint from numerous perspective on how and why this abuse occurred.

Some of the stories are quite shocking to hear since there were numerous occasions where the parents of these athletes were present during this abuse without them even being aware of it.

The story is extremely powerful and poignant to listen to and at the same time is very empowering to women who wish to have their voices heard about the various injustices that they faced on numerous levels that range from the national organization of the sport, the individual trainers who were aware of something being not right all o the way up until the University administration and along with the Federal system

Bottom Line – Amazing documentary that really is able to get to the heart of the issue and show how systematic this abuse was and how it was so easy for these young women o be afraid to come forward due to their fear of losing their professional career. The film gives us so many stories of how this abuse was perpetrated over and over on these women even in the presnece of other people including parents. The story is extremely powerful to hear and empowering to the women who were given to courage to let their voices be heard about the injustice that they faced for so many years. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – For more than 30 years, Dr. Larry Nassar worked with athletes, especially gymnasts, as a respected trainer and team physician. He taught Sunday school, volunteered in the community and was seemingly well-liked. While Nassar tended to aches and pains, becoming a friend and confidant to many girls along the way, some of the methods he presented as treatment were sexual abuse. (From HBO)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
