Brief Synopsis – A woman begins to suspect that her third husband is being unfaithful to her and must decide what is mist important to her in life
My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before coming across it during my quest to watch all films that have garnered Oscar nominations for its performances.
The premise is actually quite intriguing as they deal with how a woman must overcome obstacles in her life with regard to various issues related to her recent marriage to her third husband.
She is forced to try and decide what is most important to her in life with regard to love, family, duty and honor.
Anne Bancroft is superb in the lead role here and was quite deserving of her Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Her chemistry with co-stars James Mason and Peter Finch is great because in each case she has an on and off connection with each of them which shows how turbulent the events of her life truly are.
This is a movie that allows its story to bring up some very interesting questions about the importance of various aspects of a relationship.
The character must try and figure out what kinds of issues can be forgiven and which can be repaired and ultimately have to make a decision on how to deal with each of these various issues along the way.
Bottom Line – Very intriguing premise that tries to show how a woman must deal with the various issues within her marriage and is forced to try and decide what is most important to her. Bancroft is superb in this role and was quite deserving of her Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance here. She has great on and off chemistry with both Finch and Mason as would be expected which works really well. The story brings up some very interesting questions about what is important in a relationship and when it is essential to try and fix problems or alternatively cut all ties and move on. Recommended!
