Love Letters (1945)

“I will tell you the secret, just two words, “Be yourself”. You are afraid of that, everybody is. But I have no choice, I can’t be anything but myself. ” – Singelton

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Nov 2019)

Brief Synopsis – During the War, a soldiers writes letters for his friend in order to win the heart of the girl he loves.  After his freeing is mysteriously murdered, he tries to discover the truth of what happened.

My Take on it – This is a n interesting film that I knew nothing about before coming across it during my quest to watch all films featuring Oscar nominated performances.

The romance presented in this story comes across as being quite plausible and that ha much to do with the great chemistry between Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones as the leads.

Jones was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her work here as an amnesiac woman who has a very care free lifestyle due to the fact that she has no memory of the past.

Due to this “affliction” the conversations between these characters are so enjoyable to watch unfold because they manage to keep them very care free and unpredictable.

The story is presented quite well and they do a wonderful job finding the right balance between the mystery of the story and the romance.

This allows for things to come across quite effectively throughout.

The film has a great musical score that sounds so familiar because it has been used so often in TV and movies ever since.

Bottom Line – Great romance that works due to the great chemistry between Cotten and Jones. Jones was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her work here as an amnesiac woman who lives her life in a very free spirited way. Great dialogue between the characters that is enhanced by the care free spirit of things. The story does a fine job of balancing the mystery aspects of the story with the romance ones and stays quite effective throughout.  The musical score is great and has been used so often even since making things feel even more familiar.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This was the third of four consecutive best actress Oscar nominations for Jennifer Jones between 1944 and 1947. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
