“One! Don’t you feel dumb. Two! Look at you. Three! Don’t you ever make jokes about me behind my back or else I’ll stomp you into the ground. ” – Major Payne
Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Nov 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A marine officer in need of a new kind of battle is sent to a prep school in order to help train ROTC students.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about when it came out yet never had any desire to see what it was all about because it looked really silly and stupid.
After having watched it, I can now attest to the fact that my original thoughts didn’t change very much after having seen the film.
Daman Wayans knows how to be a great actor, but one couldn’t guess that from watching this film.
He plays his character far too much over the top and instead of being effective, he’s just annoying and atrocious to watch.
It’s hard to care about this character let alone, laugh at his stupidity like we are meant to do.
This film is basically a one joke movie that repeats itself over and over.
Unfortunately, that one joke isn’t funny at all so it make sit even more painful to watch.
The plot of this film is poorly planned out and there is nothing in this film that is memorable on any level.
Bottom Line – Terrible film that fails to be funny or effective in any way. Wayans plays his character too much over the top and doesn’t manage to make us care or even laugh at the things that he does because they are so crazy. The film seems like its a one joke idea that just keeps repeating itself over and over for 90 minutes. The problem is that this one joke also isn’t funny in any way. The story isn’t memorable at all and doesn’t work on any level.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – To research his character, Damon Wayans endured several weeks of DI qualification training, learning the requirements of a Marine Corps Drill Instructor, as well as other aspects of Marine Corps training. Viewers can see several small things he does like the cadence of his walk, almost unconsciously correcting his cover after berating & getting in the face of each cadet, and the list goes on. A common sentiment among former DI’s, not only in the Marines, but in all other branches, is their statement that one most be akin to an improvisational or stand-up comedian as a DI, since they constantly have to improvise on the spot, break down the cadets, come up with statements on the fly, and Wayans’ prior experience as one was a huge asset. Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
