Number of Times Seen – Twice (17 May 2008 and 27 Nov 2019)
Brief Synopsis – The owner/manager/player of a semi professional basketball team tries to get them entered into the NBA when the league strikes a deal for a merge but will only include 4 of the teams in their league.
My Take on it – Will Farrell is a hilarious actor, but he too often takes things over the top.
This film is another example of that.
The story is presented in a very fun way, yet things come across as being quite pointless throughout.
The tone and atmosphere of the 1970’s is presented really well yet the characters and their antics aren’t able to keep the momentum going and lose much of their appeal quite quickly.
The film is able to create some enjoyable scenes, but overall, this film would probably be better served as an SNL skit instead of a feature length film.
The film has a romantic subplot between Maura Tierney and Woody Harrelson is underdeveloped and instead of caring about these characters, their story feels much too superficial.
One of the things that I loved about this film is the way that the team itself is comprised of both the players and the announcers who travel and joke around with the other characters and their is a strong feeling of camaraderie between them all.
It looks as if they must have had so much fun making this very silly film.
Bottom Line – Fun yet pointless Farrell comedy. They get the tone and atmosphere of the 70’s right, but the story and the character’s antics lose their appeal too quickly. The film does has its moments but it might have been better as a skit on SNL instead of being a feature length movie. The subplot between Tierney and Harrelson could have been developed better and comes across as being too superficial. Loved the way that the team was comprised of more than just the players but included the announcers who travel and joke around with the other characters.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Except for the Flint Tropics, all of the team names and uniforms are the same as the real ABA. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
