In Fabric (2018)

“Dimensions and proportions transcend the prisms of our measurements.” – Miss Luckmoore

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Dec 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A cursed dress that cannot be destroyed affects the lives of its various owners in supernatural ways.

My Take on it – I have always been a fan of movies that focus on an object instead of a character and tracks the journey of this object as it moves from owner to owner.

This is a recent entry into the realm of portmanteau films and tells the tale of a cursed dress as it moves from owner to owner wrecking havoc.

The concept of this film is actually quite clever yet fails to work well enough due to the fact that it chooses to take things into very strange and weird places that take away from the enjoyment of things.

This is a movie that tries much to hard to try and justify itself by using numerous small stories that all have missed potential because the stores and characters aren’t developed well enough for us t truly care about them or what will eventually happen to them along the way.

The added weirdness of the cult scenes doing things in the background doesn’t help matters because these scenes feel too unattached and esoteric to the main stories, that things aren’t as entertaining and enjoyable as one might have hoped for.

There also seems to be a strong inconsistency between the stories because the “powers” and “effects” of the dress seem to evolve and change based on who the owner is yet that isn’t explored well enough.

Bottom Line – Interesting concept that unfortunately doesn’t work well enough because the film takes things into some very strange places. The film tries too hard to try and justify itself but the various small story lines just don’t manage to be interesting enough to care about the characters or the situations that they get themselves into. The film has an aura of a cult working in the background, but the scenes that try and explain things are too esoteric to actually make much sense.  The powers and effects of the dress towards its various owners is quite inconsistent and things aren’t explored enough to try and explain the “why” of it all.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the catalog, the color of the dress is listed as “artery”. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
