Reign of Fire (2002)

“Envy the country that has heroes, huh? I say pity the country that needs them. ” – Denton Van Zan

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Dec 2019)

Brief Synopsis – After Dragons take over the world, the remaining human survivors try to find a way to stay alive and stop the menacing threats.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about when t came out 17 years ago yet for some reason never had much of a desire to see what it was all about.

The premise of the film is actually quite intriguing and has so much potential.

Unfortunately, things feel too rushed at certain points that take away from this movie’s story being even more powerful or interesting.

The film has a great cast with both Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey showing their acting chops in the roles that they are given.

They tell this story in a pretty interesting way and they find a way to enhance things with the great special effects.

The problem here is that despite having a fascinating premise, this story doesn’t feel unique enough in the way that they preset things.

Certain scenes could have been so much more powerful and impactful than they truly are and instead they are played out here in a very simple fashion which hurts things even more.

Great seeing Gerard Butler in a small role but it’s a pity that his role is so small here.

Bottom Line – Intriguing idea that feels too rushed instead of being much more poignant. The cast is great with Bale and McConaughey doing fine jobs with these roles. The story is told in an interesting way and is helped by the special effects. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t feel unique enough in what it does and certain scenes that could have been so much more impactful and powerful are played out in too simple a fashion which takes away from things. Butler has a small  part and it’s a shame that he wasn’t given something more significant to do here.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The method by which the dragons expel fire was inspired by two actual animals: the spitting cobra and bombardier beetle. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
