Number of Times Seen – 8 (17 Dec 2015, 13 Jan 2016, 20 Apr 2016, 1 Nov 2016, 16 Nov 2017, 13 Mar 2018, 21 May 2019 and 18 Dec 2019)
Brief Synopsis – After Jedi Master Luke Skywalker disappears, the Republic sends one of their pilots on a mission to find a clue as to his whereabouts.
My Take on it – This is a film that I have enjoyed more and more on every subsequent time that I watched it over the past four years.
This is a great addition to the Star Wars saga and is able to add so much to the way that we see the events of the previous and future films in the series.
The ability to see what has happened over the past 30 years since the last film is exquisite to view since it allows for us to gain so much more insight into these characters and the world they live in.
The film does a great job of linking the characters from the last trilogy with the new ones from this story in order to show the continuity in the legacy of it all.
This story fits in perfectly with the way that the “world” of Star Wars works and things flow nice and smoothly when dealing with the new locations and characters since they fit in so well with what we already know about this series.
The story at certain junctures feels a bit too reminiscent of the stories of the original trilogy but that helps establish the fact that things in the world are cyclical and sometimes the world is doomed to repeat [past endeavors.
Thankfully, it doesn’t detract too much from the way this film can be viewed.
This story takes a much darker approach to things and allows for us to see that with these new stories, they are taking things in a whole new and risky direction than they did in the previous films in the franchise.
The biggest problem with this film tho is the fact that the story is a bit part of a whole and since the final film in the trilogy has not been released yet – (full disclosure, I’m on my way to see it in about 5 hours), it’s quite difficult to completely understand the impact and direction of everything until one is able to see the trilogy as one long storyline which will be much clearer to understand.
Hopefully the net time I watch this film (and its two sequels), I will have a much deeper knowledge of where things are meant to go along with the connections between the stories that will only be realized once the story itself is more complete.
George Lucas, JJ Abrams and co have given us so many rich characters and story lines about freedom fighters in a Galaxy Far Far Away to savor for all time and lets hope that this trilogy isn’t the final chapter in this overall story.
Bottom Line – Another great addition to the Star Wars saga that adds so much to the previous story since it allows us to see where things have led over the past 30 years. The way that they bring back some of the key characters from the original trilogy is done really well especially as they also bring in new characters to continue their legacy. The story fits really well within the “world” of Star Wars and flows quite well as it establishes some new locations and characters yet still has the same overall feel for things which allows for things to flow. The story is a bit too reminiscent of some of the previous story lines of the past films, but that actually helps show how cyclical some of these themes are and doesn’t detract too much from the overall storyline. This film takes the story into a much darker direction than previously which also works in helping establish the new direction that these stories are going. Unfortunately, like with any good trilogy, the true impact of this story will only be realized once we get to see the final film of the trilogy (which I will see in less than 5 hours from now) and then things will (hopefully) be much clearer. The next time that I watch this film (and its two sequels), I will have much more knowledge as to the direction of the arc of the overall story which will hopefully give us so much more to ponder and understand about the way that Lucas and Abrams and co wanted to tell this story about a group of freedom fighters in a Galaxy Far far Away. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – George Lucas, while maintaining that he was at peace relinquishing his material, admitted to having mixed feelings before seeing the film, likening the experience to attending an ex-wife’s wedding. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (no change from original review)
