Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Dec 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A young German boy in the Hitler Youth has his world turned upside down when he learns that his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their apartment.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a few months ago and had absolutely no desire to watch.
Due to the strong Oscar and Award buzz, I decided to give it a try and was surprised at how much it was able to surpass my low expectations.
The film does a wonderful job developing these characters and we get to see the humanity within each of them as the story unfolds.
At the same time they manage to poke fun at some of the absurdities of the time and it’s easy t laugh at those parts when presented like this.
On the surface this is the kind of story that would seem to be very foreign to the way that people can understand a certain way of life, but once the lot takes off, they find ways to make things work on numerous levels.
Taika Waititi is able to take a story like this and take it to great heights by doing some wondrous things along the way.
The story turns in to a very poignant satire that is able to present a very powerful story that comes from places that one would never expect to find them.
Griffin Davis is superb in the lead role and makes his character feel so genuine throughout.
He is helped by great supporting performances by Scarlet Johansson, Sam Rockwell and especially Waititi himself who all turn this story and the characters into something even greater than one could think possible with such a premise and subject.
Definitely one of the best films of 2019.
Bottom Line – Such a surprising film that surpassed al of my expectations The characters are all developed really well and we get to see the humanity in them all while at the same time, they show us some of the various absurdities of the movement that they follow. This is a story that on the surface would seem as if it is something that tries to portray a world that we cannot even begin to understand, but they find a way to create a story that works on numerous levels. Waititi does an amazing job with this film and does some wondrous things with this story that is a very poignant satire that tells a powerful story from a viewpoint that one would never expect to be enjoyable. The cast is great and Davis is amazing as this confused young boy. Johansson, Rockwell and in particular Waititi hep make this story so much more important with the way that their characters enhance the story and Davis’ performance. One of the best films of 2019. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Taika Waititi, who is Maori/Jewish, was asked about why he chose to play the role of Adolf Hitler, he said “The answer’s simple, what better ‘f*ck you’ to the guy?” (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
